Leaked Documents Say the Corvette Gets a DOHC V8 in 2018

Internal documents hint at a 6.2-liter dual-overhead-cam LT5 V8 for the Corvette. Are you the new ZR1?

Today’s Corvette is the modern-day champion of the pushrod engine, its 6.2-liter V8 eschewing multi-cam nonsense for one bump-stick living deep inside the vee of the cylinders. Well, that could all change very soon, with a dual-overhead-cam engine potentially slated for the Corvette as early as 2018.

Shown above, the 2016 Corvette Grand Sport

GM Authority reveals that internal GM documents indicate a dual-overhead-cam engine is headed to the Corvette in 2018. The documents, which have since been removed from the internet, point to a 6.2-liter aluminum-block DOHC engine with GM book code “Y”—marking the motor as a Corvette exclusive. According to the GM documents, the current 6.2-liter naturally-aspirated LT1 and 6.2-liter supercharged LT4 would remain available in 2018, marking the DOHC engine as potentially a limited-production high-performance option.

The only other time a DOHC engine has been featured in a Corvette was the Lotus-designed LT5 that powered the Corvette ZR-1 from 1990 to 1995. GM Authority speculates that Chevrolet could bring back the LT5 engine designation for this rumored 2018 motor.

All this evidence points to the DOHC engine as a hallmark feature of some as-yet-unspecified top-of-the-line Corvette for 2018. Will the new motor feature in the return ofthe Corvette ZR1, which made 650 horses on its last appearance? Or could it be slated for the oft-rumored mid-engine Corvette? We’ll know for certain when 2018 rolls around.

“The capability of Chevy trucks has always enabled customers to go where they want to go and that’s the inspiration is for the new Silverado Realtree® Edition,” said Sandor Piszar, director of Chevrolet Truck Marketing. “Personalized for the outdoorsman, this great-looking, very capable Silverado offers another choice for customers looking for a truck with style, capability and dependability.”

“Working with the team at Chevrolet on this new Realtree Edition Silverado really brought home to me just how important the right truck is for outdoor enthusiasts,” said Realtree Designer and President Bill Jordan. “You just don’t realize how much goes into building a true performance vehicle until you look behind the scenes. The men and women at Chevy truly delivered on this project. This truck has the perfect combination of features, comfort and safety – whether you’re driving around town, on the highway or off road.”

About the Silverado

Chevrolet Silverado is the most dependable, longest-lasting full-size pickups, with high-strength steel construction backed by proven V-8 power and efficiency.

The 2016 Silverado 1500 builds on Chevy Trucks’ legacy of dependability with a dramatic new design, signature LED lighting, advanced connectivity and enhanced customer-focused technologies. New front-end designs with a bolder, more sculpted appearance reflect the underlying strength of the Silverado’s high-strength steel construction.

Powerful, efficient V-8 engines are an integral part of the Silverado’s capability and use advanced technologies such as direct injection, Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation) and continuously variable valve timing to offer the best V-8 fuel economy in a pickup – 23 mpg in 5.3L models – and the most powerful V-8 in a light-duty truck: 420 horsepower (313 kW) and 460 lb-ft of torque (623 Nm) from the available 6.2L engine.

The 6.2L enables an 11,700-pound max trailering rating with LTZ Z71 crew cab models, when properly equipped.
